Skoda Octavia Estate 1.8T Elegance 5d (2001/Y) Owner Review

Economy
Value
VW/Audi build quality at Skoda prices. Only slight niggle is that resale isn't so strong because of the badge, but it's getting better all the time (at least as good as Mondeo/Vectra).
Costs
For a 150bhp turbo car, very good. Fuel economy usually around 35-37 mpg and servicing costs much better than equivalent for my last car (VW Golf). Spare parts costs good, too.

On the road
Driving
Handles nicely with no nasty surprises. Good for town and Motorway. Rolls a little if hustled in the country, but it is an estate, after all!
Performance
Pretty effortless pull with little turbo lag. A nice, understated Q-car with enough go to avoid 17 yr-olds in Novas if you need to.

Living with it
Reliability
Nothing major to report. A few minor niggles but all sorted out under warranty with minimum of fuss.
Image
To those in the know, a 4* rate. A bit of inverse snobbery perhaps, but I like the understated image and the fact that I've effectively got a premium product for less cost than a Vectra (yuk).
Comfort
Had a few problems with getting comfortable to begin with, but with the (infinitely) adjustable driving position it's now excellent. Rear leg room a bit tight but the dogs do very well in the boot.

Security and Service
Security
Perhaps relies on not being a joy riders favourite, so lacking a standard alarm. Central locking and immobiliser stock VW items however, so they have been well tested elsewhere.
Service
No problem too much trouble. Excellent service from a chain of dealers, many of which are small independents and still remember what customer service means.
