Skoda Octavia Hatchback 1.9 TDI PD Elegance 5d (2004/54) Owner Review

Economy
Value
I considered the Skoda alongside the Toyota Avensis, the new Mondeo and the Vectra. I liked all of them (its hard to not like any new car) but the Skoda gave so much more for so much less.
Costs
I have done 26,500 miles and averaged 57.3mpg overall (60% motorway & 40% urban I guess). I have had to buy one bottle of oil of which I used half a litre and I have had one service which cost £220.

On the road
Driving
Book a test drive and you will appreciate why I bought this car.
Performance
Round town its great. On the motorway its great up to 80mph hour but after that you wish you had bought a 140bhp 2.0 litre. 76mph returns 68mpg! Sticks to the road like its on rails.

Living with it
Reliability
26,500 miles without missing a beat in any weather.
Image
I think the inverse snobbery is great. The A4 and the Golf gang probably look down their noses at me, but who's the fool there? With the money I saved for essentailly what I feel is a better finished car I will be off to Disneyland :-)
Comfort
I suffer back ache (I cant sit in a Renault for more than 20 minutes!). Yesterday I drove 560 miles (280 each way without stopping) and my back didn't even twitch. (Didn't even use a full tank of diesel either).

Security and Service
Security
I have no idea, I assume Skoda paid as much attention to this element of the design as they did to the rest of it.
Service
Second to none. The only comment would be that the sales staff dont know the full extent of the car's features and therefore undersell it a little.
