Should you buy one?

The Skoda Superb remains a relevant purchase for those that need space, but don’t want an SUV. It manages to blend such a wide breadth of abilities into its large body that it begs the question why you’d really need anything else. It’s scheduled for replacement in 2024, so make sure you drive a hard bargain if you’re looking to buy.

Which to choose? If you want low running costs, the plug-in hybrid is worthwhile if you can keep the battery fully charged at all times, while the 150hp 2.0 TDI will be a tempting option if you’re regularly on the motorway and cover long distances. If you can stretch to the additional outlay, we’d go for the punchier 200hp 2.0-litre TDI – you won’t really notice any difference in fuel consumption and the extra torque will prove useful, especially if you’re using the Superb as a tow car.

Whichever one you choose, the Superb remains an intrinsically appealing, practical and stylish large family car and proof – if it were needed – that you don’t need an SUV for spacious family transport. It’s such an excellent all-rounder that we have no reservation in recommending one.

What we like

The sheer space available in the Superb is its main selling point, and the comfort and build quality on offer means it’s an excellent long-distance cruiser. The petrol models are good for short, local journeys, as is the plug-in hybrid Superb iV.

What we don’t like

Skoda used to have a reputation for delivering great value for money, but that’s not really the case any longer. Yes, you’ll get more for your money than in a Volkswagen Arteon, but prices are on a par with rivals rather than undercutting them by any significant margin.
