Smart 3 boot space, practicality and safety

2024 onwards (change model)
Practicality rating: 3.2 out of 53.2

Written by Jake Groves Updated: 24 July 2024

  • Roomy rear space with lots of legroom
  • Acceptable headroom
  • Only an average boot for the class

How much space is there?

Smart’s #3 is similar in size to cars like the Hyundai Kona Electric, Volvo EX30 and MG4 EV, but the #3 feels like it offers more space in some areas.

The #3 particularly excels with its rear space. Tall adults can sit behind tall drivers very comfortably, with lots of legroom in particular available. Headroom is only acceptable rather than good; helped by the fact that the #3’s as-standard panoramic glass roof features a heavy tint and does without a roller blind – something that would otherwise curb headroom.

Boot space and storage

Smart says the boot area is rated to 370 litres with the rear seats up and, unlike the #1, the rear bench can’t be slid forward or backward. That luggage area means it’s significantly bigger than a Volvo EX30, but around 100 litres smaller than a Kia Niro EV or Hyundai Kona Electric.

Storage elsewhere, however, is very good. In the front, the door bins are a good size, there are storage areas for sunglasses and a lidded cubby for your phone (that features a wireless charger in upper trims) and the centre armrest storage area includes a slot to keep a charging card and a cold air vent to keep the contents chilled.

Is it easy to park?

The #3’s body style will not help you much when it comes to parking. The rear pillars are large and the rear window itself is small, which will limit visibility despite the car itself not feeling all that large on the road.

However, regardless of your trim choice, the #3 features a huge suite of parking aids to help you out. All-round parking sensors and a 360-degree parking system is included, as well as an automatic parking system on Premium and Brabus grades.

Safety

  • Five-star Euro NCAP rating
  • A very impressive all-round performance
  • Excellent driver assistance technology

EuroNCAP has crash tested the Smart #3, and it achieved a full five star rating from the safety body. Its highest score was 90% for adult occupants, but the rest of the score categories – child occupants, vulnerable road users and safety assist (technology) – all scored 86, 84 and 85% respectively.
