Smart Fortwo Cabriolet (2007 - 2014) Passion mhd 2d Auto Owner Review
Want to know everything there is to know about this car?
In their own words
The total unreliability of the ‘startenator’ belt was a constant worry after our first experience.
Following a sheared bolt on the startenator, the timing/drive belt broke and wrote off the engine. The replacement, at 37000 miles, cost £5635.72 to be supplied and fitted.
Mercedes denied any responsibility, claiming they knew nothing of issues with the system, despite the fact they had a ‘fix’ for the bolt. This was a modified bracket kit that was supplied and fitted by Mercedes.
Despite the new engine, and the Mercedes modification, the belt broke again at less than 50000 miles. Fortunately, it was spotted before destroying yet another engine. Following another repair, the MHD system was turned off permanently.
We were speechless at Mercedes’ claims regarding their knowledge of the issue. Internet searches proved we were far from alone in suffering this problem.
I would not touch another MHD with a barge pole.
