Summary
What does this car say about you?
Thinking further than the standard small cars, design driven.
What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?
It's very small but everyone is impressed with the interior finish and the amount of space.
Would you buy this car again and why?
No. The mechanical build quality is appalling and the gearbox is just awful. Mercedes appear to have carefully crafted beautiful pieces of car and then shipped them off to a factory where they are thrown together any old how.
What are you likely to buy next?
I've already changed the car to a VW Golf TDi.

Buying experience
Type of dealer you bought from?
Franchised
Did you buy this car new?
Yes
What price did you pay?
£10,500
When did you buy the car?
July 2011
Did you get a good deal and why?
The vehicle was unregistered in the showroom and fitted with several extras including the daytime running lights and the central arm rest. The invoice value of the vehicle was a good amount less than the RRP.
Is there any special reason why you bought this car?
With the cost of fuel at an all-time high, the published MPG figures were attractive, coupled with a product from the Mercedes stable it appeared a safe bet.
What was the dealer like?
My local dealer employs their trainees in the Smart division so, whilst the salesman at Smart was enthusiastic, he had been in the position only three days on the day of my visit.

Driving it
What's it like to drive?
It's an annoying drive. In town it bumps about on most road surfaces and the automatic manual gearbox is flawed. I've driven the larger-engined MHD version and the same technology suits it better than when attached to the diesel engine of the CDi.
What's it like to park?
It's a very short car so nothing is easier to park.

Living with it
Have you had any problems with the car?
From day one the dashboard pods rattled constantly and a month in the rear suspension developed a loud clonk on any road other than a completely flat surface.
What's most practical about your car?
With only two seats and a small boot, no-one should buy this car for its practicality.
Favourite gadget, option or accessory?
The new touch-screen ICE/Sat Nav is a great gadget although it is not possible to program a full postcode into the Sat Nav.
