Summary
What does this car say about you?
Eco warrior, or just a tight wad.
What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?
They laugh - until they try it.
Would you buy this car again and why?
Yes, but be warned the 83mpg is a myth, 65mpg is achievable occasionally but brim to brim in mixed driving it's averaging 55mpg.
What are you likely to buy next?
No idee.

Buying experience
Type of dealer you bought from?
Franchise
Did you buy this car new?
Yes
What price did you pay?
£10,300
When did you buy the car?
November 2009
Did you get a good deal and why?
Mercedes Exeter offered a competitive trade-in on my aging S500 but no discount on the Smart, so I paid list but got a few freebies
Is there any special reason why you bought this car?
I wanted to go from the sublime (5ltr lwb Mercedes s500) to the ridiculous (Smart CDi) and see if I could survive.
What was the dealer like?
Ruthlessly efficient, but you are made to feel slightly second-class compared to when you buy three pointed star cars.

Driving it
What's it like to drive?
Auto change much better (54bhp CDi engine has more torque than Brabus). It is also much faster than I was expecting, easily makes 90 and comfy at 80+ and punchy acceleration (honestly!) from 20-40
What's it like to park?
If you hate walking a Smart is perfect, you can ALWAYS find a little spot close to where you want. However the auto clutch makes tight parking very dodgy on hills.

Living with it
Have you had any problems with the car?
No, but after 5000m some very un-Mercedes like creaks and squeeks from the dash and the occasional rattle from the engine on cold mornings reveal that the car is assembled in France, not Stuttgart.
What's most practical about your car?
Easy to get in and out of, split rear opening makes loading bags a doddle, lots of storage space in cabin
Favourite gadget, option or accessory?
I have the upgraded Panasonic stereo satnav with iphone and bluetooth hands free- it's fantastic. I also have both auto and paddle shifters which makes driving v. different depending on my mood.
