Smart Roadster 2003-

Want to know everything there is to know about this car?

  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

14 grand buys a lot of mini-Merc quality. Well worth opting for the - pricey - heated leather seat upgrade.

    Costs

    4 out of 5 4.0

Expect around 35-40 to the gallon when driven like it's supposed to be services aren't that cheap (app. £150 for first, which basically is an over enthusiastic oil change)

  • On the road

    Driving

    5 out of 5 5.0

Feels like a bigger car, corners like an InterCity 125, although not nearly as practical for a week's trip to Scotland.

    Performance

    5 out of 5 5.0

Keep on top of the occasionally sluggish gears and it's a dream. Ignore those that say it won't overtake without a downhill stretch and a tailwind. This thing surprises many a Beamer and Audi driver.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

Wing mirrors that leak water onto door speakers aside, and touching a very hefty oak table, it hit the first (7000 mile) service without a hitch...

    Image

    5 out of 5 5.0

Whether people love it or loathe it (mainly the former) they all agree on one thing - it's different, for all the right reasons. If you can get past the sheer 'dinkiness' of it (it's not that small), the comment you'll most hear is 'I want one'!

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

Short - mid journeys, no probs. Anything longer is a pain in the back and gives an almighty headache.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    2 out of 5 2.0

Have my doubts about the soft top/door barriers.

    Service

    5 out of 5 5.0

Smart of Wolves are big and efficient, if a little steep. But you don't mind paying that bit extra for good service.
