Summary
What does this car say about you?
It's sporty and impractical. But it's also economical and green. Different but sensible - perfect for the current climate. A car that has a sporty image without it looking like you're compensating for something.
What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?
Almost universal positive feedback. Scores highly for looks, driving quality, "cuteness", and technical curiosity.
Would you buy this car again and why?
Unlikely I'd want to as they don't make them anymore and this one has all the features I want. If they ever made a new equivalent though it would be a definite yes when they filtered down to second hand.
What are you likely to buy next?
There's nothing on the market at the moment that has the Smart's combination of performance, driving quality, economy and ecology. With that in mind I have no idea at all. This Smart may be with me for a while.

Buying experience
Type of dealer you bought from?
Independent
Did you buy this car new?
No
What price did you pay?
£5,800
When did you buy the car?
January 2008
Did you get a good deal and why?
Good deal. For the mileage and condition I'd seen many at a much higher price.
Is there any special reason why you bought this car?
Bought because it's a sporty, two seater convertible that does 50mpg.
What was the dealer like?
Car was handed over in a good condition with 3 month warranty.

Driving it
What's it like to drive?
Astonishing. The level of grip is fantastic and helps with the relative lack of power because you don't actually have to slow down all that much round corners. It likes to be revved, it likes to be driven - every journey is a bit special.
What's it like to park?
Easy forwards. Rear view is average and the rear view mirrors too small really. The only issue I have is that getting in and out when there is a car parked close to you is difficult. I have taken to choosing my parking space carefully.

Living with it
Have you had any problems with the car?
Nothing. I have learned to never park the car pointing up hill on a slope - leaks like a sieve if you do. Now sorted by reversing onto my drive...
What's most practical about your car?
Not a lot. The main boot only being accessed via the glovebox catch is irritating. Really though, this isn't a car you buy for its practicality. The most practical thing is not having to spend much money filling it up - regardless of how you drive it.
Favourite gadget, option or accessory?
I like the paddle gear change. I'm beginning to prefer paddling to normal changes, and in fact the biggest problem is when you get back into a normal car and don't change down to first at a junction...
