Should you buy one?

The Subaru Forester is quite difficult to recommend because it sits in a class of extremely competent rivals. It isn’t as well-rounded as the SEAT Ateca or as fun to drive as the Ford Kuga – and it doesn’t have the same likeable character as Subaru’s previous-generation models. In the past, that was just enough to overlook the brand’s quality and fuel economy foibles.

Changing safety and emissions regulations have forced Subaru to ditch its key selling points to keep pace with the competition – but you get the impression the company doesn’t really have enough budget to make the changes properly. Sadly, you can get better performance, better fuel economy, better handling and more seamless safety technology by sticking with one of the bigger brands.

What we like

There’s loads of space in the Forester and it has a massive boot. You also get lots of standard interior equipment, lashings of safety technology and a well-sized boot. Its high-riding suspension and four-wheel drive system also promise great things when the weather gets biblical. If you live somewhere rural, it might be the car for you (if you can live with the negatives).

What we don’t like

The Forester has lost its mojo. Its 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain is lethargic and inefficient, its CVT automatic isn’t particularly intelligent and its overly intrusive driver assistance technology ruins the experience for enthusiasts. If all you want is a practical, efficient and spacious family SUV, we think you’ll be better served by the Ford Kuga Hybrid or the SEAT Ateca.
