Pros & cons
Decent value, four-wheel drive as standard, robust build quality, high-performance WRX models are superb
Cheap interior, no diesel option, lesser models feel sluggish
Subaru Impreza Saloon (00-05) rivals
Overview
Best known for the high performance WRX STi versions, this Impreza is recognised for being great to drive with strong performance. The top versions are certainly impressive with masses of power and superb handling. However, refinement and finesse are in short supply and although these models are undoubtedly quick, they’re not very comfortable for passengers.
The standard 2.0-litre Impreza is a little lacklustre in terms of performance, but has a smoother ride and still drives well. All models come with four-wheel drive giving excellent traction, especially in the wet. This model was launched with the controversial round headlamps which found few fans. Later it was facelifted with more angled headlights.
