Should you buy one?

I wouldn’t. I’m sure there’s a good car hiding in here somewhere, but there’s still a lot of work to do to make the Tesla Model Y a truly recommendable alternative to the likes of the Kia EV6 and Skoda Enyaq.

That’s a shame because Tesla’s technology is great. It still has some of the most efficient batteries in the game, its motors are incredibly punchy and its Supercharger network is by far the best way of charging an EV up in public.

But Tesla’s tech loses its appeal once it’s packaged into a Tesla car. The Model Y doesn’t handle anywhere near as well as its competitors, its cabin is far less user-friendly, and its ride is downright uncomfortable on anything worse than a newly surfaced motorway.

To fix it, Tesla needs to employ a few more engineers who prefer tinkering with old-school steering and suspension settings rather than fiddling with iPads and software. The latter certainly has its place – but prioritising it over the former hasn’t served the Model Y well. You can do better.

What we like

You get savage straight-line speed, enough space for your family and access to the best charging network in the game. The Model Y also has a surprisingly efficient battery pack and a reliable range prediction.

What we don’t like

It doesn’t drive anywhere near as well as its rivals and it’s untenably jiggly, despite the tweaks Tesla has made to the architecture. I also think it’s dangerous that I need to use the touchscreen to adjust the door mirrors and I’m still concerned about quality. The steering knock on my test car was alarming.
