Despite its compact dimensions, the Aygo has good passenger space, however its big weak point is the tiny boot. With just 139 litres of space and a high boot lip it is only really ideal for a few shopping bags and even small suitcases may struggle to fit. However Toyota does offer a glovebox lid for the open-fronted cubby to make it more usable and secure.

Other compartments around the cabin including trays and cupholders add another 25 litres of storage while all but the most basic Aygo models have a 50/50 split rear bench which helps reach a compromise between extra luggage space and carrying passengers.

With a wheel at each corner, big windows and a glass tailgate extending down to between the tail lights, the Aygo Mk1 is very easy to park in cities and crowded shopping centres. It’s also quite robust and able to shrug off minor dents and bumps easily.

When introduced the Aygo (and its 107 and C1 siblings) achieved four stars, and was considered very competitive for one of the UK’s cheapest, lightest new cars. A retest against stiffer standards in 2012 saw it downgraded, but it remains a relatively safe bet when it comes to crash protection – it’s the lack of active tech, and a reassessment of the standards cars could meet, that results in the lower score and you’re still better off buying the newest used Aygo you can afford.

All Aygo models have ABS with electronic brake force distribution along with twin airbags. Side and thorax airbags became standard on all variants from July 2013. Previously, higher-spec models only added the side airbags and curtain airbags optional on Aygo+ and Sport models.

There is a light and buzzer seatbelt warning system on all models. All but entry-level cars feature remote central locking while front seatbelts feature pre-tensioners and there is a passenger airbag cut-off switch. Special attention has also been given to pedestrian protection in a crash with extra impact-absorbing structures. The Aygo scored 53% for pedestrian protection in Euro NCAP tests.
