Toyota Carina Hatchback 1.6 Matchplay Liftback 5d (1991/J) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
Intended as a cheap 2nd car runabout - it is actually now used for many longer journeys and has equal 1st car status!
Costs
32/34 mpg average, 37mpg on a run. Shop around for cheapest parts as prices do vary enormously - but can usually be found at a reasonable price.

On the road
Driving
Effortless to drive - good power steering, cruises at speed quietly (high 5th gear) and surprisingly quick.
Performance
Quite reasonable performance (it is a 16 valve). At higher speeds it is particularly quick - and the torque means that dropping to 4th at say 70 will see it pull well up to 110 with no problem.
-
Living with it
Reliability
Starts 1st time. Nothing other than tyres, exhaust, battery and 2 shocks needed.
Image
Hardly much street cred - but embarrassing for others when you out accelerate them on the motorway!
Comfort
Seats firm and well sculpted. Laid back driving position - long journeys no problem. Cavernous boot.
-
Security and Service
Security
No alarm or deadlocks - but unlikely to be targeted so if you don't leave anything on show you should be OK.
Service
Only once when to dealer for price for shocks - halved the price by going to an independent.
