Toyota equipped the Corolla range generously – for its age – when it came to safety. Driver and passenger airbags are standard, with ABS brakes on some models, and power steering and remote locking are also fitted throughout the range. In the Euro NCAP crash ratings the Corolla scored a creditable three stars out of a possible four (tests are now out of five).

Remote central locking is standard, as is an engine immobiliser, with an alarm standard on all models above the GS.

Plenty of handy storage space and a decent sized boot, that’s fairly low to the ground with a wide opening.
