The saloon doesn’t have the same wide engine line-up as the hatchback, so there’s only two petrol engines – the popular 1.4 and 1.6 petrol. Both are excellent – very peppy – but the 1.6 just edges it for us: there’s a bit more oomph, but just as economical in day-to-day use. The 2.0 D-4D is a little bit on the rough side, but gives useful fuel economy.
Surprisingly good handling for a family car. Steering is accurate, gearchange is slick and the suspension copes well with twisty roads while soaking up bumps and potholes on A and B-roads. It cruises happily on the motorway. Fun to drive when you’re in the mood, hassle-free when you’re not.
