Toyota Corolla Saloon (2002-2006) running costs and reliability
Miles per pound (mpp)
Fuel economy
Services are spaced 20,000 miles apart. Insurance is cheap insurance, fuel economy good. Spares are pricey, though, and some dealers’ labour rates can be quite high. Depreciation is average for the class.
Corolla is an environmentally friendly model. With an average of 155 g/km CO2 across the model line-up, its emissions are relatively low for a small family saloon. However, it’s worth noting that the line up has a high number of diesel models, bringing the average down and giving buyers more choices of low-emission versions. Diesels typically produce less CO2 than petrol engines with similar power outputs.
Eco-conscious buyers should consider the 1.4-litre diesel, which is one of the greenest models in the range. The range is impressively frugal, averaging 46 mpg.
Too early to say, but Toyota’s reputation is built on longevity – we’ve certainly heard of no problems from owners about this model. Interior trim is high quality and much classier than previous generations, but doesn’t quite have the panache of the latest Astra or VW Golf.
