Running costs
Rating: 2.9/5
Owning a Toyota Land Cruiser isn’t cheap. Even the basic Active model comes in well over £40,000, and if you want an Invincible model with its luxurious extra equipment it begins to skirt perilously close to £60,000.
Life doesn’t get much cheaper once you’ve bought it, either. Fuel economy under the WLTP cycle is a maximum of 31mpg for short-wheelbase models and drops to 29.4mpg for the long-wheelbase Invincible model. On a happier note, we found this figure quite easy to beat – around 34mpg is possible at a cruise.
With their longevity and desirability as working vehicles, Toyota Land Cruisers hold their value extremely well, and if you do sell it on you’ll likely recoup more of your money than with many of its rivals.
Green credentials
Rating: 2.5/5
Regardless of model, combined CO2 emissions of 267g/km are particularly high and combined with the Land Cruiser’s £40,000+ price tag there’ll be a hefty amount of VED to pay. Despite Toyota’s expertise with low-emissions hybrids, this off-roader’s only available with a large and powerful diesel engine – the only one of Toyota’s car models thus equipped, unless you include the van-based Proace Verso.
Reliability
Rating: 4.8/5
This is where the Land Cruiser’s value equation begins to stack up. These are cars with legendary reliability and longevity, and plenty of examples on the used market have shrugged off half a million miles with little to no complaint.
Toyota’s so confident in its models that it now provides up to ten years of warranty cover, as long as servicing takes place at a Toyota dealership.
