Toyota MR2 (1990 - 2000) GT Sports 2d Owner Review
Want to know everything there is to know about this car?
In their own words
The Toyota MR2 Mk2 (chassis code: SW20) is a great car to own and live with. It has been well engineered for a fantastic balance of engine performance, fuel economy, comfort, chassis performance and running costs because of several components being utilised from other Toyota cars.
Quick version: -Great overall balance of the car's traits -Economical if driven gently -Fantastic sports car for driving daily and long distance -Tall people are definitely welcome despite being compact -Challenging, but fun to drive when you're on track or a b-road
Long version: While the engine isn't the most potent out there, producing around 170hp for the post Rev 3 (1993-1999) cars, it is more than sufficient for a fun weekend car and quite possibly a daily driver. Elaborating on that, there is a pretty decently sized boot that can easily fit a decently sized suitcase or two, which should be more than enough for a couple travelling around Britain. The interior is comfortable for quite a few people. I am 6ft 1in and I have a comfortable amount of leg and headroom while driving despite being low enough to be slightly awkward getting in and out. Certainly not bad for a car that's smaller than most new hatchbacks. The ride, while sporty and clearly tuned for cornering performance on B-roads, is also pretty good for the majority of driving situations. Speaking of the cornering performance, it's easily comparable to a go-kart, there is a fair amount of grip in the turns and the steering is nice and responsive, but being a mid engined car, you must know what you are doing and how to handle the car if you don't want to end up in a tree. This car, while perfectly fine and controllable when you aren't on the limit, will punish you hard if you lose control of it, do not forget to check the tyres condition and brand when buying!
How reliable do you find the car?
Only one word can describe it: Bulletproof. Toyota engineers know how to make a robust powertrain and chassis. Servicing is a pain in the backside though due to the midship layout and some bits of the body getting in the way of the engine bay, but it can be resolved if you take the boot lid off and hop in!Does the car do everything you expected it to do?
This car fills in it's role of a sports car excellently. It is fun to drive with excellent handling (akin to a go-kart) while having some degree of practicality due to having a usable boot, something that some other midship sports cars rarely have. Because the engines available are based off of economy cars, combined with great aerodynamics (in layman's terms, that beautiful curvy body), the fuel milage is suprisingly good, though it suffers a bit when the pop up headlights are active.About their car
