Toyota MR2 1990-

  • Economy

    Value

    3 out of 5 3.0

Quite good value for money. You can get cars that perform much better for equal or less money (for instance Nissan 200sx).

    Costs

    2 out of 5 2.0

If you push the car, you will be making frequent stops for petrol. I have found parts to be very expensive for it. I have also found main dealers unsure of themselves with my car. Found far better serivce at performance car garages.

  • On the road

    Driving

    5 out of 5 5.0

I have a '94 G-Limited which is a Jap Import and a Non-Turbo. Real pleasure to drive, takes corners extremely well.

    Performance

    5 out of 5 5.0

For a non-turbo, this packs quite a punch. Very fast accelleration.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

For a car that is 10 years old, it is very reliable. Had a few little problems, but nothing major.

    Image

    5 out of 5 5.0

Real head turner. I did say before you can get better performing cars for the same money, but none of them look as nice as this.

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

Can be a bit bumpy. Very noisy, especially as they only have 'half doors' and the main side windows have no frames, they just come up to the seal at the top of the car. This means on old cars you do get a lot of wind 'whistle'.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    1 out of 5 1.0

Laughable. The car came with no alarm, immobiliser or even locking nuts. I had to add all 3 after I got the car.

    Service

    2 out of 5 2.0

As I said before, I have found that Toyota dealers shy away from these cars. I found a far better service from Import / Performace specialist garages.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

I have a SW20 engine in there and it is very reliable. Clutch changes on these are a nightmare though.

    Other

Have a few problems with the wiring. I have a dodgy pop-up light and the interior light works when it wants to. Same goes for the central locking and the electric windows. From what I can tell, it is all just wear and tear.

    Ownership

Did you buy the car new?

    Used

Would you buy the same model again?

    No

Did you buy from the same manufacturer again?

    Yes
