The MR2 is hot hatch, rather than sports car quick, which suits the majority of buyers. Getting to 60 mph in around 8 seconds is fair enough, but what makes it more of a pleasure is the very slick gearbox. Top speed is respectable at over 130 mph.
MR2 Mk 2 launched 1990: mid-engined, rear-wheel drive, independent front suspension, disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering. Earlier cars easily unbalanced, although post-94 cars much improved; supple and adept. It is at home in the rush hour traffic, or being taken for a recreational blast on a quiet country road. Its driving position is excellent, getting comfy is easy and everything falls easily to hand.
The steering is very sharp and it provides plenty of safe fun, with lots of useful grip.
