Should you buy a used Toyota RAV4 (2006-2012)?

For drivers looking for a capable, affordable and reliable 4x4 SUV, the third generation RAV4 is hard to beat in terms of capability. Prices start at less than the typical deposit for a leased new car, though some traders will ask strong money for late low mileage ones – we’d stick to the cheaper end, and shop around for a cared-for private example or a fresh trade in with a used car dealer.

Away from clean-air zone concerns the T180 D-4D or (T150 D-CAT if you want a two-pedal version) still makes the most sense, as economy should be over 40mpg but there’s a bit of shove for overtaking when needed. The petrol models are reliable, but quite thirsty around town even in 2WD form.

The RAV4 is a very practical and sensible choice, but if you’re looking for a tall family car for more fashionable and less off-road/poor weather reasons, this generation lands in the heart of a competitive period, when rivals as diverse as the Suzuki SX4 and Range Rover Evoque joined the market. All claimed to offer what the first RAV4 promised; fun, sporty handling with SUV-style height and off-road image.

So while we rate the third generation RAV4 highly as a used buy, there are better cars out there for enthusiastic drivers and fashion-conscious owners. Few will be as dependable, though.

What we like about the third generation RAV4

Genuinely proven reliability throughout, including the 4x4 system. Economical diesel when it’s been looked after, better-than-average automatic gearbox choices.

What we don’t like

Rather dull lineup after the sporty, fun image of the first two generations. Diesels don’t like neglect much and fall foul of clean-air restrictions. Petrol engines need high revs, feel strained when working hard. 2WD models a bit pointless but saved money new, so there are a few out there to trip up 4x4 buyers.
