All the Yaris units are flexible and easy to use. 1.0-litre models can be left wanting in faster traffic and are best avoided for regular motorway work; the 1.3 is a great all-round performer; and the 1.5-litre is lively and will entertain enthusiast and boy racer alike. The D-4D diesel is uncommonly refined for this class and offers a real alternative for the high-mileage driver.
With a combined fuel consumption figure of 67.3 mpg, it’s capable of getting from London to Newcastle-upon-Tyne and back on a single tankful.
Precise, light steering even where power steering isn’t fitted – it’s optional on the base model on earlier cars. Ride quality suffers on rough surfaces, but generally pleasant to drive.
