What new pickup trucks are coming soon?
Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster - Jan 2024
Familiar-looking new brand launches its first pickup
The standard Grenadier comes in a commercial vehicle form, but there is now a pickup version - called the Grenadier Quartermaster - for those that want a longer loading bay that is open to the elements. Sadly it doesn't have the necessary payload capacity to qualify for all the commercial tax breaks, so you'll have to really want one. It's not cheap, either, with prices starting in excess of £66,000.
Pros
- Modern tech and engines under a retro-looking body
- Very capable off road
- Simple, well-equipped model range
Cons
- Doesn't qualify for commercial tax benefits
- Van version is appalling to drive on road
Tesla Cybertruck - 2024
Tesla's electric pickup truck inches closer and closer to launch
It looks like 2024 might finally be the year that it arrives (although we've said that before...) with Tesla having held a launch event to deliver the first vehicles. These vehicles will all be heading to customers in the US, though, and we are not yet certain when or whether the electric pickup will be coming to the UK.
The rest of Tesla's models have made it over here, so it might follow suit. The company also took deposits from interested UK buyers, so the intention has been there at one point at least.
Pros
- Funky styling unlike anything else
- Promises ridiculous speed for a pickup
- Has spurred rivals to accelerate their own electric trucks
Cons
- Not yet confirmed for the UK
- Has been beset by delays
Fisker Alaska - 2025
The American truck that is on its way to the UK
Despite being an American truck, the Alaska is small enough that it should fit onto the UK's space-restricted streets. It is shorter than the likes of the Ford Ranger, for example. It promises a range of up to 340 miles, too.
Pros
- On its way to the UK
- Excellent range and performance figures
- Small enough to fit onto our roads
Cons
- Fisker brand has no established presence in the UK
- Looks more geared towards road than tracks and fields
Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid - 2025
The UK's most popular pickup is set to be the first to offer a plug-in hybrid version
The Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid is a logical and simple step, as it takes the brand's new model of truck and inserts a PHEV system from one of its passenger cars - the Kuga SUV in this case. This means a 28-mile electric range and a 2.3-litre petrol engine for the rest of the time.
Pros
- The nation's favourite pickup truck in PHEV form
- Tried and tested engine
- Promises to offer decent towing and off-road ability
Cons
- Electric range only 28 miles
- Limited details available for now
Rivian R1T - 2025?
Another American electric pickup truck that might or might not make it here
The Rivian R1T is the company's first pickup effort. It promises 0-60mph in just 3.0 seconds and a driving range of up to 400 miles.
Pros
- Promises phenomenal speed
- Huge towing ability
- Potential for long electric range
Cons
- Not confirmed for the UK yet
- Brand is unknown and untested over here
Kia pickup truck - 2025
A pickup truck could well be part of Kia's plans to branch into commercial vehicles
Absolutely nothing is confirmed now, besides some hints that Kia is considering many options, but this would be a big move from a brand that has never had a big presence in the commercial vehicle sector in any form, let alone in the pickup market.
Pros
- Would represent a big move from a brand not known for vans
- Kia is a huge global manufacturer
- Brand is planning lots of tech for its PBVs
Cons
- Lots of unknowns
- Lack of commercial vehicle experience
What new pickup trucks have recently gone on sale?
After a quiet couple of years, 2023 represented a rejuvenation for the pickup truck market. This is thanks to the arrival of two major new pickup trucks from Ford and Volkswagen, but there are other newbies of late too. The Maxus T90EV is the UK’s first fully electric pickup truck, while the Isuzu D-Max has had another facelift.
Ford Ranger - 2023
The UK's most popular pickup is totally revamped, but is still the best
It's better to drive, has a smarter interior with more tech and it has loads of different models to choose from. It's little wonder that the new Ford Ranger was named the Parkers Pickup of the Year 2024.

Pros
- Excellent to drive on road
- Fantastic interior
- Great level of kit
Cons
- Still only offered with diesel engines, for now
- High end versions get expensive
Volkswagen Amarok - 2023
Now a sister truck to the Ford Ranger, but still a great pickup in its own right
This means the Volkswagen features plenty of styling tricks from its passenger car range, and the majority of external panels are bespoke to the Amarok. It shares lots of its underneath bits with the Ranger, though, including engines, gearboxes and more. Although there won't be an electric one to start off with, VW says that it has factored this in so there could be one in the future.

Pros
- Refined to drive on road
- Strong towing and payload
- Excellent interior quality and space
Cons
- Not all versions offer 1,000kg payload
- More expensive and fewer models than closely related Ranger
Ford Ranger Raptor - 2023
The ultimate pickup truck, but beware of the tax pitfalls
Thankfully this second generation Raptor throws caution to the wind and comes with a 288hp 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine. You can still buy the diesel version, though, but you still get plenty of the outrageous styling and features.

Pros
- Great fun to drive off road
- Fast and entertaining V6 petrol engine
- Comfortable on road
Cons
- Doesn't qualify for van tax system
- Poor payload
Isuzu D-Max - 2023
A blink-and-you-miss-it facelift
The 2023 update brings minor tweaks to the looks, not so huge that they are immediately noticeable, but big enough to warrant inclusion on this list.
To find out more, read our full Isuzu D-Max review.
Pros
- Five-star Euro NCAP rating
- Practical and well-equipped cabin
- No AdBlue required
Cons
- Only one 1.9-litre diesel engine
- Rivals have more power and torque
Maxus T90EV - 2023
The only electric pickup truck you can buy, for now...
Somehow, Maxus has found a bit of trickery and upped the payload to the 1,000kg necessary to qualify the T90EV as a commercial vehicle, and therefore benefit from the related tax breaks.
Find out more in our full Maxus T90EV review.
Pros
- A fully electric pickup truck
- Offers full 1,000kg payload
- Simple model range
Cons
- Poor driving position
- Range isn't great and rear-wheel drive only
