Ford Transit Custom (2023-on) dimensions
The 2024 Ford Transit Custom is a totally new van compared to its predecessor, so the dimensions are different inside and out. We have the full lowdown on how big the UK's favourite van is, what payload it offers and how much it can tow.
Read on to find out all you need to know about the Transit Custom's practicality. If you want to know more about how it drives and what it is like inside the cabin then head to our main Ford Transit Custom review.
There are two lengths and two heights of the Ford Transit Custom, called L1 and L2 and H1 and H2. The high-roof version launches slightly after the lower model, arriving in late spring, early summer 2024. Ford has released details of its dimensions already, though, so if you are planning on replacing your van and need a bit more room in the back then you can do the calculations in advance and should have all the measurements you need.
It is worth noting that all versions of the H1, the lower model, sit comfortably below the 2m mark. This is the most common lowest entry point for most public and private car parks, so it should make it easier to get around town.

The Ford Transit Custom's loading bay has had a couple of small but handy changes for the new 2024 model. One particularly small one could make your life notably easier - there is now a slightly dropped entry step on the side loading door, making getting in and out that bit less taxing. You can also get a powered sliding side door with hands-free operation for the first time, and there are also more and better lights in the rear.
The biggest change is the new Multicab model, though. More on this below.

There are several flooring and lining options available, including half and full height side protection, and a choice of wood or the polypro setup seen below. The latter is standard from Limited trim upwards. You also get a solid metal bulkhead as standard, as shown in the picture, or you can add a glazed version. This doesn't automatically add a rear window, though, so you need to specify that as well if you want to be able to see out of the back.

The previous Ford Transit Custom was the top-rated medium van for payload at the time it went off sale, although it only pipped the next best by a solitary kilo, so it could have been that Ford deliberately created a version to pettily pip its nearest rival.
The new version is decent rather than class leading when it comes to carrying abilities. The 2.0-litre 136hp front-wheel-drive van in Leader trim with the manual gearbox is the one with the biggest payload at the time of launch, as it is able to carry 1,407kg. If weight bearing is all, then beware a little as there are several models where the payload dips below 1,000kg.
Ford Transit Custom towing ability
Not all Ford Transits have the same towing ability, so it is worth checking if you need to pull a trailer. They can all tow at least 2,000kg of braked trailer, while some top out at 2.300kg, most at 2.500kg and a few can take 2,800kg.
Handily, Ford lists the gross-vehicle-weight impact of some of its key options, too, so you can work out the payload penalty. The double-load floor will cost you 50kg, for example, while the powered side loading doors will add 34kg to the overall weight
