Mercedes Vito dimensions (2015-on)
This page features full details of the practicality of the 2015-onwards Mercedes-Benz Vito van, including load area dimensions, payload capacity and towing rating.
If you're looking for info on how this van drives, what the cab's like and whether it's worth the money, check out our main Mercedes-Benz Vito review page.
We also have a separate Mercedes-Benz eVito electric van dimensions page.
The current Mercedes-Benz Vito panel van comes in two wheelbases and two body lengths, but only one roof height. There were initially three body lengths, but the shortest of the three is no longer offered.
Initially the body lengths were labelled Compact, Long and Extra Long, but in January 2019 Mercedes changed these to L1, L2 and L3.

Mercedes-Benz Vito load area dimensions
The inside of the Mercedes-Benz Vito has changed slightly over time, but the differences are very much measured in millimetres.
The current model's major load area dimensions are:
L2 | L3 | |
Maximum load length | 2,813mm | 3,016mm |
Maximum load height | 1,252mm | 1,252mm |
Maximum load width | 1,709mm | 1,709mm |
Width between the wheelarches | 1,270mm | 1,270mm |
Load volume | 6.0m3 | 6.6m3 |
Loading height | 558mm | 558mm |
What's the Mercedes Vito load area like?
All panel van versions get a full steel bulkhead as standard and a sliding side door on both sides – something that many rivals charge you extra for. The standard rear barn doors open to 180 degrees.
You get no bulkhead as standard on crew vans, but you can option a windowed item behind the second row of seats; this helps cut down road noise and improves safety, but may limit your functionality.
Load lashing rings are fitted as standard on every model; lashing rails for the floor and the side of the cargo area are optional.
The standard-fit wood/composite floor covering and hardboard load lining for the sides are high quality and appear to be hardwearing.
An LED lighting strip takes the eye-strain out of finding things in the back after dark.
As with all vans, the Vito's payload and towing capacity varies with specification. Payload is an area where the Vito lags behind its rivals these days, with none of the versions offering a carrying ability over the 1,000kg mark. The longest model even dips down around the 800kg level.
It's worth noting that Mercedes factors in a 75kg driver for its official payload figures. We have removed that for the numbers below so these figures will look a bit higher than the ones on official Mercedes documentation.
Mercedes-Benz Vito van payload capacity
Maximum payload rating for the Vito L2 is 978kg.
Maximum payload rating for the Vito L3 is 951kg.
To reach the maximum payload you'll need the lowest trim level - Pro- and the highest gross vehicle weight (GVW) rating, which is 3,000kg (3.0 tonnes).
Any extras you add will reduce the amount of payload you can carry. On many vans, this might not be a big deal, but the Vito's maximum payload rating is around 400kg less than the very best medium van rivals. This Mercedes is not the model to choose if you've got heavy hauling to do.
Mercedes-Benz Vito van towing capacity
Maximum towing capacity across the Vito range is 2,500kg with a braked trailer - but that's only for rear-wheel drive models with the upgraded towing pack. Without this, the maximum is 2,000kg.
