This week’s Van Deal comes from GB Car Deals, who are offering the Land Rover Defender 90 for £18,525 plus VAT. While there may not be much in terms of discount, the fact production ceases next year and it popularity means that it more than meets the criteria for ‘Deal of the Week’.
End of an era
The Defender is based on the original Land Rover Series, which was launched way back in 1948. The Defender has garnered a lot of support of years, with its fan club including the likes of Lara Croft and the Queen.
The Defender, in its current form, will not be able to achieve the upcoming Euro6 emissions standard, so Land Rover has been forced to shelve the vehicle after 67 years of production. Therefore, this is one of the last chances you’ll get to be able to purchase a brand new example of this iconic vehicle.
Poor fuel economy
Under the bonnet is the Ford Duratorq engine, which also features in the likes of the Ranger, Transit Custom and Transit 2t. However, the less aerodynamic design means it doesn’t achieve the same fuel economy figures, which is a dismal 25mpg on the combined cycle.
The engine has been tuned to achieve a maximum power output of 120bhp and a high toque output of 360Nm. It’s a born off-roader with a permanent four-wheel drive, the six-speed gearbox has a selectable low range, and the front has features a two-pin diff.
Twelve bales of hay
Practicality isn’t much better either, with the 983mm load length and 925mm width between the wheel-arches not even enough to fit a Europallet. However, farmers like them because they are able to fit 12 50lb bales of hay or straw in the back.
Despite the Defender having a respectable gross vehicle weight of just over two and a half tonnes, the heavy duty chassis means the payload reflects the modest sized load volume at 765kg.
