It’s hardly seems two minutes since Fiat’s bigger and stronger Doblo Cargo hit the market in 2010, and its already received a mid-life facelift as seen at the 2014 IAA Show. Perfect timing then, for bargain-hunting small van buyers to get hold of the outgoing model at a knockdown price, like this one at the Pentagon Group up for £8,995 plus VAT.
There’s no denying that the Doblo is a strong and agile performer when it comes to light goods transport, but the Italian brand is still, unfairly, paying the price for poor perceived reliability issues of the 90’s. Build quality of Fiat products has come on leaps and bound since those dark old days and the Doblo is a testament to that.
Low running costs
This isn’t the basic spec, either. It’s the diesel version, with stop and start fitted for better fuel economy – 58.8mpg on the combined cycle, according to official figures. Low total life costs are lowered further still with the aid of long service intervals, which are set at 21,000 miles for the Doblo.
Achieving good fuel economy doesn’t necessarily mean engine performance is lacking. The 89bhp may seem a little weak, but the engine has been specifically designed for commercial use, and offer 200Nm of pulling power.
In the back, there’s 3.4 cubic metres of loadspace, a side loading door and 750kg worth of payload. It also boasts the lowest loading height in its class and a full height solid bulkhead.
