The Ford Transit Custom is the UK’s best-selling van at present – and with deals like this we’re not surprised. Discount Van Sales has the Limited 290 model with the latest 130hp Euro 6 2.0-litre EcoBlue turbodiesel engine on offer for £16,995 (plus VAT and on-the-road costs).

This is one-step down from the top-spec Sport model, so comes with loads of kit – and a saving of over £7,000.

In the cab

The Transit Custom has one of the most pleasant cab environments of any modern van – although some might argue that there’s a little too much fussy design going on in an effort to make it attractive.

Fundamentally, the seats are high, the dashboard is low – which means great visibility – the quality is tough and it’s a good driving experience, with everything from the way the steering responds and the van’s stability at speed to its usefully large mirrors taken into consideration for the benefit of the occupants.

Loadspace dimensions and payload

This particular deal is on the 290 series L1 H1 Transit Custom. The 290 refers to its 2.9-tonne gross vehicle weight – the total maximum amount the van can weigh with everything on board, including the payload, the driver and any other crew – while the L1 and H1 are typical length and height descriptors, meaning this is the shortest and lowest variant.

In practice that means a maximum load length (at floor level to the bulkhead) of 2,555mm, maximum load height of 1,406mm, and maximum load width of 1,775mm – with 1,390mm between the wheelarches. All Transit Customs come with a load-through feature which means items like pipes can be fed through to the cab for an absolute maximum load length of 3,085mm.

Cubic capacity is 6.0 cubic metres, while the maximum payload for this size of Transit Custom is 1,074kg – though this will be reduced slightly in this instance by the Limited model’s additional standard equipment.

Engine and spec

Ford’s new 2.0-litre EcoBlue turbodiesel engine is both quieter and smoother than the long-serving 2.2-litre diesel it replaces. It’s also more powerful, produces more torque earlier in the rev and comes with staggeringly long 36,000-mile service intervals. 130hp is the middle output and, with 385Nm of torque, should prove more than adequate for that one-tonne payload rating.

You will need to keep the 21-litre AdBlue tank topped up, but this should last around 6,000 miles. Claimed diesel fuel economy is well over 40mpg.

Limited specification includes a Ford Sync infotainment system with DAB radio, Bluetooth and USB socket, heated seats for the driver and outer passenger, air conditioning, cruise control and a Quickclear heated windscreen – not to mention leather trim for the steering wheel and gearknob.

Pricing and summary

At £16,995 from Discount Van Sales, this particular model is some £7,200 less than Ford’s basic Transit Custom Limited 290 asking price of £24,195. It’s a good combo of spec, performance and efficiency, and at the time of writing the deal is available while stocks last.

Deals are correct at time of publication. Everyone’s financial circumstances are different and credit is not always available – Parkers cannot recommend a deal for you specifically. This deal is representative of those available this week.
