Volkswagen has announced a new range-topping Black Edition for its Caddy small van. Limited to just 500 examples in the UK, and loaded with both equipment and value, the Caddy Black Edition is expected to be a popular – if short-lived – addition to the VW commercial vehicle line-up.
What do you get with the VW Caddy Black Edition?
The Black Edition is based on the Caddy Highline, but includes £2,000 in extra kit as standard.
As the name suggests, it’s finished in black “pearl effect” paint, which is applied to the bumpers, door mirrors and door handles as well as the body panels, complemented by black roof rails and a set of 17-inch Canyon alloy wheels finished in black and silver.
A set of front foglights with cornering light function (helps illuminate dark turns at night) and suspension lowered 27mm completes the exterior makeover.
On the inside there’s extra luxury in the form of full carpeting, leather multi-function steering wheel, leather gearknob and gaiter, and a DAB digital radio. You also get air conditioning and a heated windscreen, which will certainly be handy with winter approaching. Cruise control is another standard feature.
What’s the engine choice in the Caddy Black Edition?
The only engine option is the 102hp version of the VW’s popular 2.0-litre TDI turbodiesel engine with BlueMotion Technology.
This means stop-start, low rolling resistance tyres and regenerative braking – which recovers energy that would otherwise be lost when the Caddy slows down to help power the electrical systems – are all fitted, and help the Black Edition achieve a claimed 60.1mpg.
How practical is it?
The Black Edition is based on the standard length Caddy, rather than the Maxi, which gives buyers the following dimensions and cargo capacity:
- Maximum load length: 1,779mm
- Maximum load width: 1,556mm
- Width between the wheelarches: 1,170mm
- Maximum load height: 1,244mm
- Total load area volume: 3.2 cubic metres
- Maximum payload: 703kg
You also get a single sliding side door in addition to the rear doors.
How much does the VW Caddy Black Edition cost?
This limited edition van is on sale now and priced at £19,370 – which is an On The Road price, but does not include VAT.
That’s quite a chunk of change for a small van, but actually works out at only £800 more than the equivalent Caddy Highline model, so given what all the extra standard equipment would cost from the options list, going for the Black Edition represents a saving of £1,200.
Typically, these special edition VWs sell-out quickly, so if you’re interested you’d best get a wiggle on.
