Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has announced a new tipper conversion for its mid-size Transporter T6 van.

Based on the Transporter chassis cab, the new Tip-Up body is the work of conversion specialist Ingimex, and is designed to offer a smaller alternative to more common tipper conversions of the larger VW Crafter.

What types of VW Transporter tipper are available?

The Tip-Up body is available on T30 and T32 Transporters – the T numbers referring to gross vehicle weights (GVW) of 3,000kg and 3,200kg, respectively.

This in turn means a payload capacity of 800kg for the T30 and 1,000kg for the T32.

Is there a VW Transporter pickup as well?

Should the tipper’s loading capacity sound a little limited for your requirements, VW and Ingimex are also offering a Transporter dropside conversion without the tipper capability.

Called the Pick-Up, this weighs around 200kg less, and thus takes payload to 1,000-1,200kg.

How does this compare to pickup-based tippers such as the Toyota Hilux?

VW hasn’t given the loadbed dimensions, but it seems likely the Transporter will offer more room on board than an equivalent tipper based on a conventional pickup.

Arguably, a pickup tipper like the Hilux conversion we’ve recently tested should be more capable of tackling rough terrain than the Transporter. But both the new Tip-Up and Pick-Up Transporter conversions can be specified with 4Motion four-wheel drive for extra traction.

Adding 4Motion will have a negative impact on the payload, however; the Extra Cab Hilux Tipper has four-wheel drive as standard and still carries 1,000kg.

How much does the VW Transporter tipper cost?

The Transporter Tip-Up conversion costs from £3,255, the Pick-Up from £1,880 – that’s plus VAT and the cost of your chosen Transporter chassis cab.

The entry-level chassis cab price is £23,040 on the road (excluding VAT).

The Transporter Tip-Up and Pick-Up join a range of ‘one-stop-shop’ conversion options available to order direct from your local VW Commercial Vehicles dealer, saving time and leaving you with only a single invoice to deal with.
