The Ford Transit is set to get a notable set of upgrades for its 2024 model year change, with new digital technology, upgraded axles and a new automatic gearbox all on the menu for the popular large van.
The most significant updates are all centred around the connectivity and digital offering, with more kit offered as standard and increased functionality.
There are several new features for 2024, with the latest Sync 4 system to be offered as standard across the Transit and electric E-Transit range. This will come with a 12.0-inch touchscreen and an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster in front of the steering wheel.
This will come equipped with connected navigation with real-time traffic information and a 5G modem to enable over-the-air updates for the software.
Helping out with deliveries and conversions
Long wheelbase Transits with an automatic gearbox can also get a new ‘Delivery Assist’ system. This is aimed at those who spend their day jumping in and out of the van to pick up and drop off items.
It aims to automate many of the security tasks involved with regularly stopping at the side of the road. If you move the gearbox in to Park then it will stop the engine, activate the hazard lights and the alarm and lock any doors not needed to get out of the cab and get into the loading bay.
When you get back in again and press the brake pedal then the process is reversed – the engine is restarted, and the hazard lights are turned off.
It will also come with Ford Pro’s ‘Upfit Integration System,’ which is a system that lets you control aftermarket features fitted to your vehicle – the temperature in a chilled van for example.
Stronger and safer
There are other upgrades to the 2024 Transit, most of which are set to be under the skin but they will still be very welcomed. Many safety systems are now standard, with Pre-Collision Assist with Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Alert and Aid, and Intelligent Speed Assist all now included.
A new eight-speed automatic transmission will be offered on front-wheel drive Transits – the current model offers a 10-speed ‘box. This lighter box enables a boost of gross vehicle mass to 4,250kg. It could well increase payload potential, too, but these figures are not yet available.
Ford is also adding new wheel hub and brake systems, which reduce weight by up to 27kg. It also claims that this allows the brakes to be changed more easily – all four discs can now be replaced two hours quicker than before.
Finally, there will also be a heavy-duty Gross Axle Weight Rating pack for front-wheel drive Transits. This boosts front-axle maximum weight to 2,000kg from 1,850kg. This should benefit those converting their Transit to a horsebox, for example.
How much will the 2024 Ford Transit cost and when can I buy one?
You will be able to order the upgraded 2024 Ford Transit from late July 2023, but the first vehicles won’t be delivered until summer 2024. This is a slightly longer lead time than Ford is offering for its normal Transit, which is currently between 6-8 months.
Pricing details should be available closer to its arrival.
