The Ford E-Transit will boost its maximum range to 249 miles with the electric van getting a new 89kWh battery.

Ford has revealed the new version at the 2024 CV Show, with the extended range model set to head out to customers in 2025. It will be offered across a wide selection of the large van’s models, with as many as 19 versions set to be able to benefit.

The new battery takes the E-Transit’s maximum capability up by around 28%, with the current model officially able to go 196 miles between charges. The new battery also brings a selection of other upgrades, notably to the charging.

Maximum AC charging is now 22kW, up from 11kW. DC fast charging capability has been boosted from 115kW to 180kW, where possible. This means that a 10-minute charge can add up to 72 miles of driving range, while getting from 10 to 80% can take just 28 minutes.

The new increased range takes Ford into the realms of the new large electric vans that are offering big batteries with large ranges. The 249-mile maximum is not as big as that offered by some rivals, but it is much more competitive than the Ford’s previous top level.

Multiple versions

There will be a wide selection of vans and body styles that can offer the new 89kWh battery. This includes L3 and L4 length panel vans, double-cab-in-van and single chassis cab body styles. Unlike some other big battery large vans such as the new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, the vehicles will come with a choice of gross vehicle weights, with 3.5-tonne and 4.25-tonne options available.

Ford hasn’t given a detailed breakdown of the payloads for the various versions, but it has said that it will be possible to carry as much as 1,460kg in the panel van and 1,814kg on the chassis cab. Basic maths would suggest that the 3.5t version will be able to carry around 710kg of payload.

When can I buy the extended range Ford E-Transit and how much will it cost?

Ford has said that order books will open for the E-Transit extended range ‘later this year’ with deliveries starting in early 2025. It’s a bit soon for pricing details just yet, but expect there to be a premium over the standard model’s starting price of around £48,000.
