This is the first UK-market electric commercial vehicle launched by incoming Chinese brand Skywell. Codenamed 233, it was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show earlier in October 2024, alongside the company’s new Q electric hatchback.
Skywell has its sights set squarely on the EV versions of established large vans such as the Ford e-Transit, Mercedes eSprinter and Renault Master E-Tech. There’s a passing resemblance to the large Stellantis vans in the Skywell’s front-end styling, but it looks a more contemporary design.
How big is the Skywell 233?
The 233 will be available in two body lengths (5,490mm and 5,990mm) and two roof heights (2,200mm and 2,700mm). The long body, high roof configuration is shown here. Skywell claims cargo volume of 9.5 to 13.0 cubic metres, depending on which body is specified. That’s pretty competitive against the opposition.
Two gross vehicle weights will be available, as well – 3.5 to 4.25 tons. That means it can be used by drivers who haven’t upgraded their license to the higher, EV-specific weight category. According to Skywell, the 4.25t GVW allows a payload of 1,755kg. Again, that compares well with rival large electric vans.
There will be a choice of 88 or 105kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery packs, both produced by leading heavy-duty battery producer CATL. Whichever you choose, drive is provided by a single permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that produces 201hp and 370Nm of torque.
Skywell has not yet released any performance or range figures for the 233. We’ll update you when we get them.
What will the Skywell 233 be like to live with?
The three-seater cab is described as ‘spacious and ergonomic.’ The image here shows it looks quite smart and car-like. A 15.6-inch touchscreen display dominates the dashboard; wireless smartphone connectivity and wireless device charging also feature. A 6-way adjustable driver’s seat and keyless entry/start add to the convenience.
There’s a comprehensive set of driver assistance features, as well. They include intelligent cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assist and intelligent speed assist.
Who is Skywell?
Skywell is the leading automotive brand of the Skyworth group, a vast conglomerate based in Guangdong, China whose subsidiaries make everything from audio-visual equipment to buses. Indeed, it was the bus maker – Nanjing Golden Dragon Bus – that established the Skywell brand for its light commercial vehicles.
Skywell vehicles are imported to the UK by Innovation Automotive (IA). Established in 2021, the company also imports the DSFK EC35 small electric van, of which only a few hundred have been sold. It seems plans to sell the Skywell D07 medium van didn’t materialise.
Now IA is trying to gain a stronger foothold in the UK by importing Skywell cars, starting with BE11 electric SUV that goes on sale in November 2024. The Q hatchback unveiled in Paris is also expected to reach the UK.
When can I buy a Skywell 233 and how much will it cost?
Skywell says the 233 will make its UK debit at the Commercial Vehicle Show in April 2025. The vehicle’s official name and pricing will be announced at that time. We anticipate that you’ll be able to buy one before the end of 2025.
