There’s a new entry-level version of the Volkswagen ID Buzz Cargo available. It’s powered by a 59kWh lithium-ion battery and offers a WLTP range of 200 miles. Prices start from just under £36,000.

The 59kWh battery in the new model compares with the 79kWh unit that’s been the sole option in the ID Buzz Cargo until now. Its 200 miles of range plays against the 277 miles offered by the 79kWh version. The 59kWh model is also less powerful, with a 170hp electric motor driving the rear wheels. The 79kWh model comes with a 286hp motor.

With the smaller battery, the ID Buzz Cargo is quite a lot lighter, weighing in at 2,311kg unladen – over 130kg lighter than the big-battery model. The 59kWh model has a payload of 692kg in a 3.9 cubic-metre load bay, and has a gross vehicle weight of 3,000kg. It can also tow 1,000kg and carry two Euro pallets loaded sideways.

The 59kWh ID Buzz Cargo is capable of charging at a rate of 165kW, which means a 5-80% charge is theoretically possible in 30 minutes. It comes in the Commerce trim level which includes such standard features as a 12.9-inch infotainment system display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, climate control, heated driver’s seat, front and rear parking sensors, and keyless entry.

The VW ID Buzz Cargo 59kWh is priced at £35,960 excluding VAT. Order books are open now.
