Ssangyong Musso (18-24) capacity & size

3.8 out of 5 3.8

The SsangYong Musso’s load area is the deepest of any pickup currently on sale in the UK, takes a Euro pallet easily and features a 12-volt / 120W power outlet including water-resistant cover.

It also comes as a long-bed variant, originally in Rhino trim but from 2023 as a higher-spec Saracen+ version. This version of the Musso has the longest load area of any double-cab pickup in the UK, despite also having one of the largest passenger compartments as well.

By contrast, the smaller standard-length Musso is one of the shortest pickups around, at under 5.1m long in total. This combined with the relatively narrow width of the load space means this doesn't have a particularly big cargo area.

However, both versions have very impressive payload and towing ratings, and can combine the two in a manner than no other pickup on the market in the UK can match.

Ssangyong Musso (18-24) payload, weight & towing

4.5 out of 5 4.5

Exact figures depend on whether you’ve gone for a manual or an automatic Musso, but both versions fare very well here.

And if you're looking for a pickup that can tow to its maximum while legally carrying a vast amount in its loadbed then this could well be the vehicle for you.

SsangYong Musso payload

According to the latest official technical data, maximum payload rating for the standard-length SsangYong Musso is 1,150kg with the six-speed manual gearbox and 1,095kg for the optional six-speed automatic transmission.

Both of these have a maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 3,250kg, that's the legal maximum weight of the vehicle and everything onboard, and an official max kerbweight of 2,155kg.

Either way, if it's heavy loads you need to shift, the larger SsangYong Musso LWB is the one you want. This has a GVW of 3,400kg, a kerbweight of 2,195kg and a maximum payload rating of 1,205kg.

That is highly competitive against all best double cab pickups for payload.

How much can a SsangYong Musso tow?

Equipped with the standard six-speed manual gearbox, the SsangYong Musso has an official braked towing rating of 3,200kg (3.2 tonnes).

When fitted with the six-speed automatic, however, the SsangYong Musso has a towing rating of 3,500kg (3.5 tonnes), matching the very best any rival pickup can offer. This includes the Musso LWB, which can also tow 3.5t.

Unbraked towing capacity is 750kg across the range.

The best gross train weight of any pickup in the UK

Where the SsangYong Musso comfortable exceeds the capability of any other pickup sold in the UK is with its gross train weight (GTW) - the total allowed weight of vehicle and trailer combined.

Even the GTW for the standard-length Musso with the standard manual gearbox is an immense 6,450kg; one of these with the optional auto is rated to 6,750kg

As a result, SsangYong rates the total official load capacity at 4,305kg and 4,595kg, respectively, so you’re able to carry over a tonne of load while also towing to the SsangYong's maximum capacity.

Upgrade to the Musso LWB, and GTW increases to 6,900kg, enough for a combined load capacity of 4,705kg.

No other pickup comes close.
