Volkswagen Caddy dimensions (2015-on)
The VW Caddy is available in short (standard) and long (Maxi) wheelbase form, but there is no option of different roof heights on offer. There is a Kombi version should you wish to carry people rather than parcels.
Nope, you're not imagining it - according to the official figures, the Maxi is both slightly taller and slightly narrower inside than the regular Caddy, although the differences are so negligible that you will be very hard-pushed to notice unless fractions of millimetres are crucial to your load carrying.
What is worth noting, though, is that the wheelarches mean the Caddy can't quite swallow a Euro-pallet sideways. Which seems a bit of an oversight.
However, the 4.2-cubic metre load volume of the Caddy Maxi is right up there with best in the small van sector.
Volkswagen Caddy internal size | Caddy | Caddy Maxi | Caddy Kombi |
Maximum load length (mm) | 1,779 | 2,249 | 1,823 |
Maximum load height (mm) | 1,244 | 1,259 | 1,240 |
Maximum load width (mm) | 1,556 | 1,552 | 1,190 |
Width between wheelarches (mm) | 1,170 | 1,168 | 1,168 |
Maximum load volume (cu m) | 3.2 | 4.2 | 1.6-4.1 |
The Kombi version is based on the Maxi, so it comes with the same external dimensions as the bigger of the two panel vans. However, if you want to take the seats out and treat it as a van from time to time, then you won’t get the same loading width because of the space taken up by the doors. It still offers a decent 4.1 cubic metres of capacity in that case, and 1.6 cubic metres with all the seats left in place.
Volkswagen Caddy external size | Caddy | Caddy Maxi | Caddy Kombi |
Exterior length (mm) | 4,408 | 4,878 | 4,878 |
Exterior height (mm) | 1,823 | 1,836 | 1,831 |
Exterior width with mirrors (mm) | 2,065 | 2,065 | 2,065 |
Exterior width mirrors folded (mm) | 1,793 | 1,793 | 1,793 |
Wheelbase | 2,682 | 3,006 | 3,006 |
Payload is not the Caddy’s strong point, with a maximum carrying ability of just 736kg. You have to go for a petrol model to get that, too – the 102hp 1.0-litre TSI with the manual gearbox.
The full range of payloads stretch from 545kg to 736kg – not great when the best-in-class are now capable of carrying more than 1,000kg.
