Astra Convertible scored four out of five stars in Euro NCAP crash tests and the reinforced windscreen pillars and rear steel head restraints provide passengers with sufficient rollover protection. It’s packed with safety features, including front airbags, ABS, and three-point seatbelts throughout, while traction control is fitted on all but 1.6 models.

Soft-tops can be vulnerable to theft, but all models get remote central locking with deadlocks, an alarm and immobiliser. Additional security measures may be needed to reassure insurers.

The all-year-round versatility of a convertible is a big draw for buyers and the Astra looks great in the sun with the roof down. Lengthy journeys may be impractical for tall passengers and access to the back seats is hampered by the two-door design, though this is only a major concern if they are frequently used. The 330-litre luggage capacity is functional and larger than both the 306 and Beetle Cabriolet.

It can carry the weekly shop and isn’t infringed by the fold-down roof too much, either. The electric soft-top roof – which can be operated by the key fob – folds away neatly into the boot within 30 seconds, and can be redeployed with minimal fuss in case of a quick change in the weather.
