Should you buy one?

If you’re in need of a plug-in hybrid hatch but you want something that serves up some enjoyment on a winding road, the Astra GSe is well worth a look. Although we’re not blown away by the refinement of the hybrid system, it’s brisk enough while the ride and handling balance impresses. Given the low BIK rate of the hatch, it’s a good shout for company car users and worth considering over the Golf GTE and Cupra Leon e-Hybrid.

Even so, we can’t help but think a 180hp Astra Hybrid in GS-Line trim is usefully cheaper if not quite as sharp to drive. If you’re not desperate for a sporty sensation, regular PHEV versions of the Octavia and Leon are better still.
