  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

Prices are good on the private market for what are very practical cars.

    Costs

    5 out of 5 5.0

Frugal motorway driving can just about push 500miles from the 50l tank. Parts are common and reasonably priced.

  • On the road

    Driving

    3 out of 5 3.0

Not the most enthralling drive. Ride lacks sophistication on A and B roads, but runs very nicely on motorway.

    Performance

    3 out of 5 3.0

Engine pulls best between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm, but you sacrifice fuel economy if you want any fun behind the wheel. Overtaking is possible, but will need a downshift.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

Never failed to start. Wet brakes jammed having not been moved for a few days, but fixed with a sharp tap from a hammer.

    Image

    2 out of 5 2.0

Looks big and clunky. Mk III Escort and 306 have aged better.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

At 6'4", this is the first car I've not put the seat all the way back to drive. Interior is cheap compared to younger cars, but can transport 5 men without complaint. Boot space and folding rear bench gives very impressive load capacity.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    2 out of 5 2.0

Most reports claim the locks are lacking, although lockable glovebox gives extra peace of mind.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

Engine control reverted to fall-back system once (dash light and lower idle revs only noticeable effects). Fixed by turning electrics off and on again.
