What is miles per pound?
Fuel economy
A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test.
Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 29 - 47 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

Parts and servicing costs are low and engines are all very economical, even the GSi can better an average 35mpg. long-term ownership costs should be pretty low as an Astra of this vintage will not cost you much to buy.
Properly maintained low-mileage cars are generally sound. 1.4 litre and 1.6 litre 16-valve ‘Ecotec’ cars can suffer from sticking valves. If you encounter one with lots of owners then it could be a sign of an unreliable car but if given proper servicing then the Astra was generally a reliable car.
