Vauxhall Calibra 1990-
  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

Best value performance coupe nowadays. For 2-3K you can have a practical supercar (if you do your homework and don't buy a dog)

    Costs

    5 out of 5 5.0

Cavalier prices, breakers are full of them. New parts from AutoVaux.co.uk, very cheap

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

It's not a Supra or Skyline at 120+, but it's composed enough.

    Performance

    5 out of 5 5.0

As standard it's nippy, but with a decent intercooler and uprated fuelling and boost it can do over 300bhp. I've measured 5 seconds flat on the accelerometer. Not bad for an old Vauxhall. Look at max-boost.co.uk for tips.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

If it's been neglected, it can cost several thousands to put right. If it's been loved, it can boost happily at over 150K miles.

    Image

    3 out of 5 3.0

It's a Vauxhall, and it's got an image problem as a 'Cavalier in drag'. So cops won't notice it and vandals won't bother. Nice.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

It's alright if you don't lower it and the shocks are changed with OEM replacements.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    5 out of 5 5.0

Cat2 alarm and immobiliser as standard. Who's going to nick it anyway?

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

Vauxhall dealers (and most specialists) are hopeless when it comes to these cars. They charge a lot and damage them with their ignorance. Seek advice at ClubCalibra.com and ClubCalibra.net

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

Nothing gone wrong, but maintenance has been obsessive.

    Other

Minor electrical problems, usually corroded contacts. Nothing dramatic. I had the front wishbones changed pre-emptively though, along with all coolant and boost hoses. Saves lots of trouble down the line.

    Ownership

Did you buy the car new?

    Used

Would you buy the same model again?

    Yes

Did you buy from the same manufacturer again?

    Yes
