Economy
Value
Cheap privately and retain most of their value, better models cost. Basic models easy to find. Just buy the right engine.
Costs
Will do 400 miles to a tank, 10 gallons. Practically endless supplies of scrap parts.

On the road
Driving
Unassisted steering is very uninvolving at speed. Easy to drive and throw about, gets unsettled on rough roads. Suspension could be better dampened, and steering sharper.
Performance
Rather poor. Engine definitely built for reliability. The 1.2 8v has low power, but plenty of torque. At times feels easier to drive than 16-valve cars. Good for 1st car.

Living with it
Reliability
8v engines will run through 100k miles, with good and cheap servicing.
Image
Can look tidy in the right colour, with GSi spoiler and alloys.
Comfort
Seats a little hard, steering wheel and pedals misplaced and pedals too low and cramped. Rear cabin on both 3dr and 5dr is spacious for four.

Security and Service
Security
The LS and Merits get no security packages.
