Vauxhall Corsa Hatchback (2006-2014) running costs and reliability
Miles per pound (mpp)
Fuel economy
Vauxhall Corsa running costs vary depending on the engine chosen, but overall they are competitive. Insurance ratings for the Corsa are also generally low – some models qualify for group one, making it an appealing option for young drivers. Servicing costs and parts are good value, too, and parts availability for routine maintenance is excellent, with thousands of Corsas in daily use in the UK.
Fuel economy is good, although the small benefit of the 1.0-litre over the 1.2-litre (50mpg vs 49mpg) doesn’t seem a great advantage for the sacrifice in performance. The 1.0-litre engine is also less reliable overall, and as a used buy, we’d recommend sticking to larger, less stressed models.
Later 2010 and 2011 versions of the 1.3 CDTi diesel have a claimed average fuel consumption of 70mpg plus. Resale values reflect the reduction in running costs, but the cost of maintenance may be higher. It might be worth purchasing a used car warranty if you find the perfect, low mileage example.
The greenest model is the 1.3 CDTi ecoFlex, which in Life, Expression and Club trim emits 104g/km of CO2 and can average 71mpg. The best Vauxhall Corsa for low emissions is the 94g/km 2011-on 1.3 CDTi ecoFlex 95bhp.
Vauxhall Corsa reliability has improved, and the car feels far more robust and better built than previous models, but it’s not been without its faults. There have been several recalls regarding handbrakes, braking and steering that affected a considerable numbers of cars. Check that these recalls have been carried out before buying a used Corsa.
