Vauxhall Mokka-e boot space, practicality and safety

2020 onwards (change model)
Practicality rating: 2.5 out of 52.5

  • Same passenger dimensions as Mokka petrol
  • Which means back seats are cramped
  • Boot is smaller than ICE version due to the battery

How much space is there?

For a car designed for small families, we reckon the Mokka Electric is going to be left wanting unless you’re carting around small children only. Although it’s all-but identical to the petrol-engined version, so there are no compromises in going electric, there are compromises with the all-round design.

For instance, while rear seat space in the Mokka Electric is the same as you’ll find in the combustion-engined version, it’s not good enough. Cabin space up front is acceptable, with decent elbow room especially, but there’s limited headroom and legroom for adults in the rear, and that affects all-round usability.

The rear door openings are on the small side, too, which makes getting bulky child seats inside tricky, and access in general could be better. Small side windows don’t help matters, because the already-dark cabin doesn’t get as much light as some rivals. It’s a price you must pay for the car’s sharp exterior design.

Rear-seat room is not a strong point. It’s hindered by small windows and poor legroom.

Boot space and storage

Fitting a large battery in a small car like the Mokka Electric has an impact on boot space when compared with the petrol-engined version, and that model isn’t among the small SUV class leaders when it comes to carrying capacity anyway. The Mokka’s 350-litre boot shrinks to 310 litres in the Mokka Electric. Most of this is lost under the false floor, though, so you still get a level load lip.

The 60:40 split-back seats still fold completely flat, too, while there’s 1,060 litres of space in this configuration. Again, this is a little way off the small SUV class leaders, whether they’re electric or not.

There aren’t any clever extras in the Mokka Electric’s boot, but the electric drive system does benefit cabin packaging. The electric parking brake and dinky drive selector toggle on the centre console create extra space for storage, including a slot for smartphones that features wireless charging on higher-spec cars. There’s a decent glovebox and door bins, too.

Boot space isn’t generous, but at least it has a level load floor, and the rear seats fold completely flat.

Is it easy to park?

Here’s where we rate the Mokka Electric. Unlike some small SUVs the Mokka Electric has a slightly elevated driving position that offers a good view of your surroundings. While the rear windows are small enough to make the back of the car feel a bit claustrophobic, visibility from a driver’s perspective is good.

To help you get in and out of spaces, the Mokka Electric has the option of front and rear parking sensors, a rear camera and even a 360-degree view around the car, all of which work well. There’s no fancy self-parking tech (that most people never use), but these extras should mean it’s simple enough to manoeuvre without the need for them.

Safety

  • Shares Mokka petrol’s four-star rating
  • Similar safety score to rivals
  • Auto emergency braking included

While the electric Mokka Electric hasn’t been tested by Euro NCAP, the petrol-powered Mokka was examined in 2021 and earned a middling four-star rating. This score still applies to the electric model because it shares the same platform and suite of safety features.

There are six airbags fitted to all versions, while Isofix child seat attachments are included on the outer rear seats. Isofix also features on the front passenger seat, which has an airbag cut-off for when fitting a rear-facing child carrier.

The more advanced electronics found on the Mokka Electric includes Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, while lane assist is also offered. All models come as standard with a combined cruise control and speed limiter system, while adaptive cruise control is also available on higher-spec cars.
