The Vectra has not been re-tested since it scored a four out of five star Euro NCAP rating in 2002 a good score at the time, but many rivals have improved on this. The safety equipment includes six-airbags, active head-restraints and pedals that release in a collision to minimise leg injury. Isofix child seat anchor points are fitted to the rear seats.

The 2007 Mondeo has a slightly bigger boot until the rear seats are folded, then nothing this side of a Mercedes E-Class can match the Vectra estate. The boot is further enhanced by a clever partitioning system to help keep things in place in the back while on the move. On higher spec’d models, the boot opens and closes at the touch of a button either on the key fob or the tailgate itself, and there’s the option of a foldaway tow bar that quickly releases from behind the bumper when needed.

Roof rails are also optional.
