As with most in this class, safety and security are a priority. Vectra has six airbags, ABS and impact protection to keep the passenger cell cushioned, while security is good all-round. Euro NCAP rate it as a four-star car, just behind the class leaders. Alarm and immobiliser exceed strict Thatcham standards; effective deadlocks are standard.

The saloon has a massive boot – and it’s more than capable of swallowing the suitcases for a family holiday. A wide opening makes it easy to access, but it is a little too high off the ground. Vauxhall’s storage ideas aren’t very innovative, but at least you get a couple of cupholders.
