Economy
Value
New price has fallen since bought from new. Had to have one at the time though. Wouldn't buy brand new again. Holds second hand price better than most cars.
Costs
2.0-litre engine is an old reliable lump (old Golf GTi engine) so not that economical. 2.0-litre engine also uses quite a lot of oil. 5th gear seems to be quite low on motorway, so 100mph is 5,000rpm.

On the road
Driving
Brakes, suspension and engine like Golf GTi. Predictable safe handling, especially with ABS and electronic stability control that are standard.
Performance
Not fast, but well aqequate for UK. Handling better than golf GTi as stiffer chassis. Top speed not as good because of un-aerodynamic shape and heavier than Golf. 5th gear is lower than Golf.

Living with it
Reliability
Completed 35,000 miles now from new and no failures as yet. The 2.0-litre engine is basically a derivative of the Golf GTi and if treated properly, good for 200,000 miles.
Image
Still gets looks as not that many about. Road users seem to be more curteous and friendly compared to when you drive a BMW. New Beetle drivers normally 'flash and wave' to each other, so fun.
Comfort
Well adequate. Rear headroom is restricted, but ok for kids.

Security and Service
Security
Manufacturer's security alarm and deadlocks seem ok, but heard of them being stolen and quite saught after.
Service
My dealer has been good, but expensive. Have heard horrendous stories from other Beetle owners on web site www.newbeetle.org.uk
