Economy
Value
Decent spec, big boot.
Costs
A bit on the high side. Brake pads cost me £60! Your better off going to a VW specialist.

On the road
Driving
Very smooth and comfortable. More refined than the Golf.
Performance
Sluggish when you move off but otherwise very good on the motorway. It grips well on corners, although with a bit of body roll.

Living with it
Reliability
DISAPPOINTING.A shame as the rest of the car is sound. Apparently its a common fault on these 1.6 gearboxes when the rivets snap off and totally crack the gearbox casing. I dont understand why VW have not recognised this major fault. VW SORT IT!
Image
I think its the best looking Golf based saloon that VW have produced. However AVOID 1.6 engine and go for the 1.9 TDI engine to avoid that weak gearbox.
Comfort
Rear legroom is a bit tight, but still OK for a short to long trip. Smooth ride.

Security and Service
Security
Well I've still got it. Comes with deadlocks and an anti hi-jack feature where only the driver's door opens when the key fob is pressed once.
Service
Poor response when I had this serious Gearbox fault.
