Economy
Value
For mix of quality/image/power and handling you are hard pushed to find better.
Costs
Same as any car this age, don't expect to buy and pay nothing. Running gear will be old so make sure it has been replaced or budget for it.
-
On the road
Driving
Perfect. Drives like a RWD but without tail happy problems. Can be harsh suspension-wise, but on smooth roads point it the way and it goes.
Performance
Rebuild charger and fit new chip/pulley to give near 20bhp. Will more than match a VR6 and give low down torque for town driving and power for motorways. Fast and smooth will keep up with most new fast cars.

Living with it
Reliability
Again, make sure you service when needed and engines are strong and reliable. Keep an eye on charger and you can't go wrong.
Image
Rare, not Japanese, VW. Out-classes BMW etc... People will ask what it is and compliment it.
Comfort
Seats are amongst the best in standard form. Driving position is low and supportive. Can fit 4 adults if need be but best as 2 seater.

Security and Service
Security
Poor as stock, but most have cat 1 by now
Service
Don't go to main delaer for service unless it really matters. A good German specialist will understand the car better and cost less.

Problems
Engine
Should be strong if serviced. pg engine is proven.
Other
Solid buy for those who understand them. Some bad cars out there but a good one will hold its value now easily.
